Why You Need a Properly Sized HVAC System for Your Home

Many factors can cause your HVAC system to run ineffectively. Baggett Heating and Cooling shares why a properly sized system is an essential factor to a well-working unit.

Having an incorrectly sized unit could have detrimental effects on your HVAC system, your energy bill, and the overall atmosphere of your home. The right-sized HVAC unit can help prolong the lifespan of your system.

What are some of the signs to look for to tell whether or not you have an oversized or undersized unit?

  • The system will have short cycles or turn on and off constantly.
  • Higher energy bills
    • An undersized system can run too much and cause higher energy bills AND a system which is too large can cause higher energy bills as well.  The secret is efficiency from a sizing standpoint is for it to be precisely sized.
  • Poor air circulation indoors, poor air quality, and excess humidity.
    • If your system is incorrectly sized, it could have trouble removing moisture from the air, which will cause an increase in humidity. This can not only negatively affect the air quality in your home or damage furniture and electronics, but it could also breed bacteria, mold, and other viruses that could be detrimental to your health.
  • Frequent breakdowns
    • If your system is constantly turning on and off, it can strain the components and their parts. Not only can it be an annoying inconvenience, but it can also be expensive.
  • Lots of noise
    • Adequately sized HVAC units should make little to no noise. If it’s incorrectly sized, the wear and tear can cause havoc on the engine motors, causing them to become noisy and disruptive.
  • Reduced lifespan
    • An HVAC unit, on average, should last 15-20 years; however, if you have the wrong sized system, that timeframe could be significantly reduced.
