Starting in 2019, furnace manufacturers will be required to use more energy-efficient fans under a new government rule.

According to the government findings by the Department of Energy, new efficiency standards for fans installed on forced-air furnaces will reduce power consumption by as much as 46% and save U.S. consumers more than $9 billion on power bills through 2030.

Also, More efficient fans, which will be required beginning this year, will reduce carbon emissions by as much as 34 million metric tons through 2030.

Savings

The DOE said that a furnace rated at 70,000 Btu/hour uses 1,000 kWh of electricity a year (an average), so a consumer paying 14 cents per kWh for electricity now spends $140 a year to move conditioned air around the house. A 46% savings would drop that bill by $67 a year.

Fan Efficiency Rating (FER)

At Baggett Heating & Cooling, we are and always have offered at least 3 options to homeowners when they choose a new system. Our higher-end furnace systems have included the ECM* fans for years. ECM fans are not new to the industry they are just now being made the minimum standard. This means that a basic model can be purchased at a little bit lower price while those supplies last. What does this mean to Clarksville, TN homeowners individually? At this point, we believe the basic model price may increase by $200-$500 once the new model furnaces are the only ones available. If you are planning a replacement in the next 1-3 years anyway and you plan to buy the minimum standard system, then you may want to consider replacing your system today instead of waiting.

This only affects gas-fired furnace systems. Electric heat pump systems are not affected by this change.

Baggett Heating & Cooling has been around for over 30 years, so we’ve seen the changes that have happened over those years. If you think it’s time for an A/C replacement or just want to make sure your A/C is working at peak performance, give
