Spring is Coming! Let’s go outside and check our A/C

Spring is finally here, and that means hot sunny days are not far behind. Now is the time to start planning some spring cleaning on our cooling system. While only a professional can check the coolant levels, there are things that you can do yourself to save a few dollars.

Wear appropriate clothing for the task at hand. Cleaning anything outside and around the home tends to be a dirty job.

A Few Suggested Common Tools

  • Rubber Gloves
  • Screwdriver
  • Level
  • Kitchen Butter Knife
  • Rake
  • Vacuum Cleaner

Preparation
You’re going to be on your knees around the compressor, so clear away all the leaves and anything left over from the winter season. Give yourself a nice space to work with. This will also keep foreign matter away from the compressor, when you’re ready to have it cool your home again.

Make sure you turn the power off to the unit. Safety should always come first.

The main focus of the day is to clean the condenser fins. Those are the fine metallic blades that surround the unit. When the condenser pulls in the surrounding air, it has the unfortunate job of trying to deal with all the dirt and dust that comes along for the ride.

First, vacuum the area with the soft brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner.

Next, try to straighten the fins that have been bent over time. You can purchase a tool for this job from a local home improvement store, or a kitchen butter knife can also be used. The fins are delicate, so be sure to take your time and work slowly. If large areas show damage, you’ll need to have a professional take over.

If you are comfortable with unscrewing the fan to gain access to the interior of the condenser, vacuum up any debris inside that has been left behind by weather or even mice. Be careful though, you will not be able to completely detach the fan, make sure not to disturb any of the wiring.

Remember, a small amount of time given to your outside compressor can increase its efficiency and longevity.
