Here are some expert answers from Baggett:

Is routine maintenance required or necessary?

Regular maintenance is crucial for optimal performance. To keep your system in tip-top shape, we suggest a quick, professional check-up twice a year – once for your cooling system and once for your heating system.

What kind of filters should I be using, and how often do they need to be replaced?

There are many different replacement filter products on the market, ranging from basic fiberglass filters to pleated, high-efficiency filters and even reusable filter options. The type of filter you have can impact how often it needs to be replaced. Generally, pleated air filters will need to be changed less frequently than fiberglass options. It’s best to get a measurement of the pressure inside your duct system in order to know if your system can accommodate a high efficiency filter. Baggett can help with that. Much more info on filters can be found here.

Why is the added labor warranty important?

We know how important it is to know the difference between HVAC warranties, so we fully detail the difference between a manufacturer’s warranty and an extended warranty here.

How often should I clean my ductwork?

The frequency with which you should clean your ductwork depends on various factors, including the type of HVAC system you have, the local climate, and whether there are any specific issues with your indoor air quality. In general, the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends regular checks of air ducts, roughly every 3 to 5 years, to ensure they’re clean and functioning well.

Why is attic insulation important to the HVAC system?

Attic insulation plays a crucial role in the overall efficiency and effectiveness of your HVAC system. Here are several reasons why attic insulation is important for the HVAC system:

  • Energy efficiency
  • Reduced energy costs
  • Temperature regulation
  • Humidity control
  • HVAC system longevity

Why is this certain area of my house hotter in the summer or cooler in the winter?

Uneven temperatures in different areas of your house could be attributed to various factors. Here are some common reasons for temperature variations in specific areas:

  • Insufficient insulation
  • Air leaks
  • Inadequate ventilation
  • Duct issues
  • HVAC system imbalance – This includes improperly sized or configured HVAC systems that may cause your system to struggle to maintain consistent temperatures throughout the house. Some rooms may receive too much or too little conditioned air.

Do I really need two units in my house?  Can’t I just buy one larger one?

Many factors can cause your HVAC system to run ineffectively. We explain more on why a properly sized system is essential to a well-working unit here.

How can I determine the age of my HVAC system?

Check the serial number on the unit or consult your home inspection report. Baggett provides more info on your unit’s age here, and can also help you identify the system’s age during a maintenance visit.

How long should my HVAC system last?

According to Carrier, an air conditioner has a typical lifespan of around 15 years. So, if your unit is acting up and is over 15 years old, then it might be better to replace it.
