Baggett Heating and Cooling says: If your HVAC is nearing the 15 years mark, it might be more economical to replace the unit rather than fork over more money to fix it.
To be clear, most HVAC units can be repaired, and Baggett Heating and Cooling will always give you an honest appraisal about when it’s time to replace. But, here are a few things to look at when trying to figure out when it is more economical to do so.
- First, take a look at its age. According to the National Association of Home Builders, an air conditioner has a typical lifespan of around 10-15 years. So if your unit is acting up and is over 15-years-old, then it might be better to replace it.
- The cost to repair vs the cost to replace. Let’s say your repair bills have been around $450. Multiply that by the number of years, say 12 years and you come up with an amount that can almost pay for a new system!
- R-22 Refrigerant. Many older air conditioners still have R-22 refrigerant, whereas newer modes have R-410a refrigerant. R-22 refrigerant prices have gone through the roof. What used to cost $90 to top off your refrigerant, can now cost upwards of 10 times that much. So, economically, it would behoove you to get a new unit.
