Why Your HVAC Unit Blower Wheels Need to be Cleaned

Blower wheels and its blades are tasked with moving air throughout your duct system. Baggett Heating and Cooling explains why you need to keep them clean.

A blower wheel is designed to keep air moving in and out of your HVAC system, and after years of use, dirt can build up on the blades. Most blower wheels need to be pulled and cleaned every 3-5 years, depending on usage and the home. A dirty blower wheel can negatively affect the airflow in your HVAC unit, causing your heat exchanger to overheat and AC coils to freeze. It will also reduce the efficiency of your blower motor and your entire system. Dirt build-up can also impact the blower motor itself.

Common causes of a dirty blower wheel

  • Lack of filter replacement
  • Leaky, unsealed return ducts
  • Lack of system maintenance

Dirty blower wheels could lead to other repairs and services, including

  • Blower motor replacements
  • Blower wheel replacements
  • Duct cleaning
  • Duct repairs
  • Or a complete duct system replacement

The benefits of cleaning the wheels are

  • Extending the lifespan of your HVAC system
  • Reduce monthly electricity bills
  • Increase your HVAC system’s efficiency
  • Improves indoor air quality
  • Reduced blower noise

Baggett Heating and Cooling recommends you contact a professional for this cleaning.  Dusting off the wheel may not be enough to keep your system running in tip-top shape. And if you aren’t knowledgeable of how systems work you could damage the system or easily hurt yourself.

To help prevent any malfunction or ensure your system works properly on brand new or even older systems, Baggett recommends regular maintenance performed on your HVAC system. Regular maintenance is best for your equipment, and also it protects warranty coverage as well. Baggett inspects blower wheels on all maintenance plan visits and recommends when it is time for the additional maintenance of pulling and cleaning it.
